Assam Assembly Elections 2026
The north-eastern state of Assam is gearing up for a crucial political contest as elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly approach. The polls, which will decide the next state government, are scheduled to be held in a single phase on April 9, with counting of votes slated for May 4, according to the election schedule announced by the Election Commission of India.
The election notification was issued on March 16, marking the formal start of the poll process. The last date for filing nominations is March 23, while the scrutiny of nominations will take place on March 24. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 26, after which the final list of contestants will be published.
Assam has a massive electorate for the 2026 assembly polls. According to the Election Commission’s final electoral roll, the state has around 2.49 crore registered voters across its 126 constituencies. This includes 1,24,82,213 male voters, 1,24,75,583 female voters, and 343 voters belonging to the third gender category.
Polling will take place in thousands of booths spread across the state, including urban centres such as Guwahati and remote tribal and riverine regions. The Election Commission has also made arrangements for special polling stations and facilities for elderly voters and persons with disabilities.
